In the Hindu culture, there is a more profound significance of having a place for prayer or a pooja room in every house. We all believe that this room is a sacred room where all the positive energies emerge from and radiate into the rest of the house and our lives.
‘Pooja’ meaning homage, honor, reverence, worship, and adoration is a Sanskrit word and is a quintessential part of the Hindu culture. We offer flowers, fruits, sweets, and light to the divine as a symbolic offering of our whole mind and body., our thoughts, actions, desires, and possession as a mark of devotion and with the intentions of seeking the blessings of the almighty for a happy, fulfilling and prosperous life.
Vastu Shastra, the Vedic science of architecture, has special importance for the pooja room of a house. It refers to the pooja room as the epicenter of positive energies. Vastu says that the pooja room plays a pivotal role in harnessing and spreading positivity throughout your home. However, due to lack of space in modern houses and not many people being well-versed in Vastu guidelines, people ignore this important and miss out on the opportunity to take a dip in the oasis of calm, peace, and harmony in their life. So, to make it easier for you, we have collated some of the most important pooja room Vastu tips for your home. The Pooja Room Direction - The location of the Pooja room in a house is of utmost importance and Vastu gives all the importance to the direction, which is critical in defining the auspicious aura. Vastu recommends that northeast is the most ideal direction (to harness maximum energy from the sun) to have the pooja room, followed by east or north. It is also recommended to avoid higher floors and basements of the house for the pooja room. The best location to place the mandir is the ground floor or level.
The Pooja Room Design - The ceiling of the pooja room should be low and a pyramid-shaped top (adds symmetry to the small pooja room and helps in achieving the meditation state easily) is always better as it helps to create a positive atmosphere in the room and the whole house. And if space allows, a threshold (keeps ants and insects out) and two-door entry are good.
The Pooja Room Placement of Idol - Place the idol of the god and goddess a few inches ahead of the wall (to ensure continuous airflow around the idol and aid in enveloping the idol with the fragrance of the incense sticks) and a little higher from the ground (at least six inches). Portraits and images of dead or death and war and violence have no place in the pooja room.
The Pooja Room Color of the Walls and Floor - The ambiance of the pooja room has to be peaceful, tranquil, and harmonious and this can be achieved only by putting colors like white, pale yellow, and lighter shades of blue. Lighter shades reflect light and make the pooja room look bright and illuminated. Vastu suggests avoiding darker colors in the pooja room as dark colors will interfere with the sense of calmness and peace of the pooja room. The floor of the pooja room should also be the same way, either white or tones of cream. Putting marble is the best in the pooja room.
The Pooja Room Door - Vastu recommends the door of the pooja room be two-shutter and made of high-quality wood. Additionally, the doorway should have a threshold to keep the pooja room free of insects, flies, and ants. Also, the idol should not be placed exactly in front of the door of the pooja room.
Today due to the lack of space and no separate area for a pooja room in apartments, people place the pooja in a small corner in the kitchen or the bedroom. Vastu suggests it is better if such places are avoided. But, if it is the last resort, ensure that it is placed in the northeast corner of the room and has two shutter doors to keep it closed when not used.
