Ramzan is considered to be the holiest month of the year in Islam. It lies within the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. This is called the lunar
calendar which is based on the cycles of the moon. People search for the crescent moon through the naked eye. It marks the start of the month.
Sometimes astronomical calculations are also used for a better overview. One can talk to an astrologer online and inquire about a specific date. After
personally seeing the moon, the religious leader makes an announcement, and then Ramadan begins.
This holy month is a time for renunciation, sacrifice, and a period of reflection and spiritual growth. Ramadan symbolizes a sense of unity among Muslims around the world, fasting together. Worshipping of Allah can be done anytime but every religion celebrates festivals and has reason or history behind it to do so. One must not forget to thank God for his uncountable blessings - for giving us this beautiful life, air to breathe and serene nature to sustain. Devotees pray to Allah to grant them paradise when angels come to receive them and they breathe their last breath.
Prophet Muhammad received the first revelations of the Quran, the holy book. That is why it is celebrated. Fasting is one of the five most essential principles of Islam. Devotees fast daily from sunrise to sunset without drinking a drop of water. Those observing fast gather together before dawn for a pre-fast meal called suhoor. The fast is then broken at dusk called the iftar. The fast is observed for straight 30 days without any break. Muslims also refrain from having any bad thoughts or behavior. Male members of the family go to mosques to pray. Charity is second among the five pillars. Muslims offer services and distribute gifts among the ones in need.
Eid-ul-fitr (13th May 2021)
At the end of the month of Ramzan, Eid is celebrated. The day starts with a special prayer. It is believed that Allah directs its followers to pay ‘Fitr or Fitra’ before offering the Eid prayer. Hence, it is called Eid-ul-Fitr. Different varieties of dishes are prepared. All members of the family wear new clothes and wish each
other Eid Mubarak. Young members receive gifts or money in the form of Eidi. Friends and family gather together to celebrate this auspicious day.
